Hembadoon Shaaji (born 29 July 1975) is a Nigerian performing artist and cultural ambassador from Gwer Local Government Area, Benue State. Renowned as one of the most accomplished dancers of the Benue State Council for Arts and Culture, she has represented Nigeria nationally and internationally, showcasing Tiv dances, traditional textiles, and other aspects of Benue’s rich cultural heritage.
Hembadoon was born on 29 July 1975 in Gwer, Benue State. She attended NKST Primary School, Wadata, and Padopads Secondary School, Makurdi. She later pursued higher education at Benue State University, earning a Diploma and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts.
From an early age, Hembadoon demonstrated a strong interest in the performing arts. While football initially attracted her, her mother discouraged the pursuit, citing marriage prospects. Instead, she engaged in drama and acting, appearing in children’s productions by the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), including Tales by Moonlight and Cockcrow at Dawn.
Hembadoon’s professional journey began in 1994 when she joined the Benue State Council for Arts and Culture. Her employment was facilitated by a dramatic appeal to her uncle, a government official, demonstrating her determination to pursue her passion despite opposition.
Although she initially lacked formal experience in dancing, Hembadoon drew inspiration from her mother, a skilled dancer and leader of a dance troupe. She quickly mastered Tiv dances, including Swange, the signature dance that brought national recognition to the Benue State performing troupe. She also embraced traditional textiles, ensuring the troupe’s performances highlighted Benue’s cultural heritage.
Hembadoon earned numerous accolades throughout her career, including the Queen of the Millennium award in 2000 and Best Dancer during a troupe tour in France. Her skills led to her secondment to the National Troupe of Nigeria, further broadening her national and international exposure.
Hembadoon has performed extensively across Nigeria and in countries including France, Canada, Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba, India, and Israel. Her international tours showcased Tiv dances, traditional costumes, and Nigeria’s diverse cultural repertoire. Colleagues have praised her versatility, leadership, and ability to teach new dance techniques to other performers.
Beyond performance, Hembadoon has combined her career with entrepreneurship, establishing a bungalow and departmental store selling cosmetics, clothing, and other provisions. Her dedication to the arts and her cultural advocacy have positioned her as one of Benue State’s most influential artistes.
She remains celebrated for her skill, humility, and commitment to preserving Tiv and Nigerian cultural heritage. Her story exemplifies perseverance, talent, and devotion to cultural excellence.
Hembadoon enjoys dancing, traveling, and sports, including volleyball and football. Her passion for performance and culture continues to inspire younger generations of Nigerian artistes.
