Blessing Nev is a renowned Nigerian dancer from Logo Local Government Area, Benue State, celebrated as one of the finest performers of Swange, the traditional Tiv dance. Recognized as the Best Dancer at the Swange Music and Dance Festival 2019, she represents a new generation of Tiv artistes carrying forward the rich cultural heritage of Benue State both nationally and internationally.
Blessing Nev was born at High Level, Makurdi, Benue State, the younger of the Nev twins. She hails from Abeda Mbadyul, Logo Local Government Area, and grew up in a culturally vibrant environment. Her mother, Adezamber Nev, a former dancer from Shangev-Tiev in Konshisha Local Government Area, played a significant role in cultivating her love for cultural performance. Adezamber’s early exposure to Tiv folk entertainment, particularly the Kwagh-hir and Sua dance groups in Mbatiav, Gboko Local Government Area, instilled a deep appreciation for music and dance in her daughters from an early age.
Blessing and her twin sister were captivated by cultural troupes performing near their home. They frequently watched rehearsals at the Ebony Theatre, a pioneering private cultural troupe, which introduced them to performing arts. By the age of five, they were already participating as child actors in stage productions, including early NTA programs such as Tales by Moonlight and Cockcrow at Dawn.
Blessing Nev attended Happy Day Nursery and Primary School, High Level, Makurdi, completing her primary education in 2009. She then enrolled at Dyege Memorial College, Logo Two, Makurdi, for her secondary education, obtaining eight credits including English Language and Mathematics in 2016. She aspires to pursue a university degree in Theatre Arts to the highest level while continuing her career in dance.
Blessing Nev’s professional journey began around 2010 when she and her twin sister were formally recruited by Gondo Aluor Productions, led by Prince Edward Gondo, a veteran pioneer artiste of the National Troupe of Nigeria and former Director of Culture, Benue State. She gained wide recognition as a member of Takuruku Entertainment Troupe, which emerged overall best at the Swange Music and Dance Festival 2019, held at the Aminu Isah KontAgôra Arts Theatre, Makurdi.
Her dedication and skill earned her the Best Dancer title at the festival. She attributes her success to rigorous rehearsal schedules, discipline, and obedience to instructions, often practicing mornings and evenings from Monday to Saturday, with occasional Sunday sessions. She emphasizes that contrary to negative stereotypes about artistes, her training under the Dance Guild of Nigeria strictly prohibits amorous relationships, ensuring a professional and disciplined environment.
Blessing Nev has performed extensively with multiple troupes across Benue State, including Ebony Theatre, Heritage, Viashima, Takuruku, and Naka Splendid, showcasing her versatility and mastery of Tiv dances, particularly Swange.
Blessing Nev’s accomplishments reflect her commitment to Tiv cultural preservation and personal excellence. At the 2019 Swange festival, she not only helped her troupe win the overall best award but also achieved personal recognition as the festival’s best dancer. Her success has brought her into the limelight, earning admiration from colleagues, mentors, and the general public.
Blessing Nev emphasizes discipline, commitment, and continuous training as keys to her success. She remains focused on her academic and professional goals, aspiring to run her own cultural troupe in the future. She credits her mother’s encouragement and her early exposure to performing arts for her achievements, noting that cultural heritage, dedication, and moral integrity are essential for sustaining a successful career in entertainment.
As a young cultural ambassador, Blessing Nev embodies the continuity of Tiv artistic traditions while modernizing the presentation of Swange for contemporary audiences. Her achievements inspire emerging artistes, particularly female dancers in Benue and across Nigeria, to pursue cultural arts with professionalism, discipline, and dedication.
